MASTER'S ARTISTRY Murakami Kibori Tsuishu

Centuries of lacquer mastery in a castle town

Murakami has been celebrated for quality natural lacquer since the Heian period. Six lacquering techniques are practised here, the most representative being Tsuishu — matte cinnabar-red lacquer with deep all-over carving and intricate geometric ground patterns, deepening to a rich gloss with years of use.

Murakami Kibori Tsuishu

Carved Lacquerware of Murakami

Murakami, a historic castle town, is home to Japan's only Shinto shrine bearing the word 'urushi' (lacquer). Six techniques are designated, including Tsuishu, Tsuikoku, Shu-dame-nuri, and Sansai-bori.

The signature matte cinnabar red gradually transforms with use, shifting to a vivid, deep gloss — a reward for the owner who lives with the piece.

Products range from chopsticks and tea utensils to vases, trays, accessories, and furniture.
