MASTER'S ARTISTRY Nagaoka Butsudan

Three roofs — a signature of Nagaoka

Distinguished by zelkova-wood doors with deep ro-iro lacquer polish, high-relief sculptural carving, gold-leaf finish, and an unusual three-tiered inner shrine — most altars have only one or two tiers. Craftspeople actively develop new designs for national competitions and run craft workshops in local schools.

Nagaoka Butsudan

Buddhist Altars of Nagaoka

The zelkova-wood panels polished to a deep ro-iro lacquer sheen, combined with high-relief carving and gold-leaf decoration, give Nagaoka altars a dignified presence.

The three-tiered inner shrine (kuuden) is unique to this region; most altars elsewhere have only one or two tiers.

Craftspeople continue to push the craft forward — winning national design competitions while conducting workshops in local primary schools to pass the tradition to the next generation.
