MASTER'S ARTISTRY Niigata Shikki

Thirty varieties of coating — and counting

Tracing back to early Edo period, Niigata lacquerware centred on everyday household items still found in many Niigata homes. Five traditional coating techniques are officially designated, including the signature take-nuri (bamboo-grain) finish, and over thirty variant coatings exist. A revival project since 2014 is reconstructing lost techniques of 19th-century master Shibata Zeshin.

Niigata Shikki

Lacquerware of Niigata

Origins trace to the early Edo period when Shunkei-nuri lacquer techniques spread from Noshiro in Akita Prefecture.

Five coating techniques — including take-nuri, hana-nuri, and ishime-nuri — are designated, alongside more than thirty variant finishes.

Since 2014, young craftspeople have been reviving the lost decorative coatings of Edo–Meiji master lacquer artist Shibata Zeshin.
