MASTER'S ARTISTRY Ojiya Chijimi

Cool, light, washable — a summer classic

Unlike Niigata's five other designated crafts (all silk), Ojiya Chijimi uses ramie (hemp) yarn. This light, cool pre-dyed ikat weave with plain warp and ikat weft is now also made into shirts, jackets, and summer bedding — bringing ancient technique to contemporary life.

Ramie Crepe of Ojiya

Ojiya Chijimi is unique among Niigata's designated crafts in using ramie rather than silk.

The pre-dyed ikat (kasuri) weft thread is hand-rubbed to create patterns, then woven with a plain warp in the yoko-sogasuri technique.

Light, breathable, and machine-washable, Ojiya Chijimi has found new life in contemporary shirts, jackets, and summer bedding products.
