The Tsubame-Sanjo area has been famous for metalwork since the early Edo period, its skills renowned worldwide. Sanjo Buddhist altars feature elaborate hand-forged decorative metal fittings and ornate inner shrines built closest in spirit to the Kyoto tradition.

The Tsubame-Sanjo metalworking tradition dating to early Edo forms the backbone of these altars' distinctive character.

Sanjo Butsudan are known for imaginatively crafted hand-forged metal fittings, and for inner shrines (kuuden) that adhere most faithfully to the Kyoto altar tradition.
