MASTER'S ARTISTRY Tsubame Tsuiki Doki

Two centuries of hammering copper into art

With over 200 years of history and international awards since Japan's debut at the Vienna World Exposition of 1873, Tsubame hammered copperware continues to fascinate collectors worldwide. The world's only colouring technique applied to copper is practised at Gyokusendo, whose historic building is open for public demonstrations.

Hammered Copperware of Tsubame

A tradition of over 200 years, Tsubame copperware debuted internationally at the Vienna World Exposition of 1873 and has since won awards at exhibitions worldwide.

Gyokusendo, whose master Tamakawa Nobuo is a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuho), practises a unique method of applying diverse colours to copper found nowhere else on Earth.

The workshop — housed in an Important Cultural Property building — is permanently open to the public, showcasing both the historic architecture and artisan techniques.
